Dain earned his PhD at the University of Wisconsin - Madison where he developed computational pipelines, software packages, and web-based data dissemination platforms for large-scale mass spectrometry based-omics experiments. As a postdoctoral fellow at the Morgridge Institute for Research, he explored how real-time mass spectrometry data analysis could be leveraged to improve the efficacy of lipid profiling. By analyzing data on the fly, he detected when specific biomolecules were poorly characterized and triggered re-analyze these species.
